President Stephen Jordan announced an ambitious initiative for MSU Denver to grow its Latino enrollment to 25 percent of the student population in order to be named a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).
HSI designation brings with it many benefits for all students and faculty by making the school eligible for U.S. Department of Education grants in the areas of student support services, academic materials and increased scholarships as well as the renovation and creation of campus facilities.
Jordan noted that, with one in five Coloradans and one in three Denver residents being Latino, higher-education attainment for this population was imperative for the state to remain economically vibrant. By 2018, 67 percent ofColorado jobs will require some form of post-secondary education.
An HSI Task Force appointed by Jordan made recommendations for strategies to achieve the HSI designation by 2017. Many of those recommendations have since been instituted, including offering select master’s degree programs and developing college-preparation programs at Denver-area high schools to help students and parents navigate college admissions, financial aid and enrollment.
MSU Denver’s efforts led to its being named an Emerging HSI in 2010, the only four-year university in the metro Denver area designated as such.
The University is currently on track to achieve its goal, with Latino enrollment for the 2014 fall semester at 20 percent for resident citizens.
