Steps to Finding Your Fit

As students become more engaged in racial justice and social impact, they are increasingly conscious of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) during their job search activities. While DEI is not an important value for everyone, for those who believe it matters, it is important to ensure that they are working within a company whose values match theirs (Source: National Association of Colleges and Employers).

By following these steps, students can better identify and find diverse and inclusive organizations before and after graduation, making it easier for them to “find their fit.”

The number 1

Research

Taking time to research the company or organization can reveal a lot about their environment. Taking these steps can help determine if an organization is the right place for you to work.

  • Visit their website and review their mission statement.
  • Do they show a commitment to DEI anywhere on their website?
  • Read reviews of the company and visit their LinkedIn page.
  • Does their staff appear diverse?

The number 2

Stand Out

Update your resume/cover letter to help you stand out among your competition to diverse and inclusive organizations. All of these may have components of promoting diversity and inclusion.

  • Highlight any identity-based organizations or clubs you have been a part of or conferences you have attended.
  • Were you involved in volunteering, committees, etc.?
  • Do you speak more than one language?

The number 3

Interview

Remember, you are interviewing the organization just as much as they are interviewing you!

  • Ask about team morale and office culture.
  • Affinity Groups are formed around shared interests and goals. Similarly, Employee Resource Groups (ERG’s) are employee-led groups that foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. Ask if the organization has or is willing to support affinity or employee resource groups.
