Master of Arts in Teaching: Elementary Education with Alternative Licensure

The Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education with Alternative Licensure Program (ALP 2 MAT) is a two-year program designed for those who want to obtain a teaching license and earn a master’s degree with an endorsement in Elementary Education.

PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT

ALP 2 MAT candidates must:

• Have been hired as a full-time elementary teacher in any Colorado Front Range area public school district, public or private charter school, or accredited private school.
• Pass the PRAXIS #5901 – Three Subtests in Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science
• Meet the Colorado Department of Education ALP requirements

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

• Students must indicate completion of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Provide Supplemental Documents (uploaded as part of the ALP application):

  • Personal Statement – Please submit a personal statement addressing the points below. Submissions must be one page, double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins.  Document must be in .PDF or .DOC/.DOCX format.

ALP 2 MAT REQUIREMENTS

Year 1

• Attend five days of Summer Seminar training in July
• Attend MSU Denver ALP 2 MAT licensure classes and complete the ALP 2 MAT coursework which are integrated into the licensure classes during the first year of the ALP 2 MAT licensure program (They are not taken separately.)
• Demonstrate proficiency on approximately half of the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards
• Complete a Teacher Work Sample
• Begin building a Teaching Portfolio documenting progress toward meeting the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards
• Complete 140 hours of contact time with support team
• Face-to-face coaching
• Face-to-face classes

Summer between Year 1 and Year 2

• The following MAT courses are to be registered for and taken ON CAMPUS:
  • TEDM 6100 – Educational Research
  • MTLM 5610 – Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Perspective
  • CLDM 5510 – Foundations of Education for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students

Year 2

• Complete remaining requirements for Teaching Portfolio
• Demonstrate proficiency on remaining Colorado Teacher Quality Standards
• Complete 85 hours of contact time with support team
• The following MAT courses are integrated throughout the second year of the ALP 2 MAT program with instruction and supervision provided by an ALP 2 instructor (They are not taken separately):
  • EDUM 6190 – Elementary Student Teaching and Seminar
  • TEDM 6800 – Capstone – Lesson Study for the Master of Arts Teaching Degree
• Face-to-face coaching
• Face-to-face and online classes
• Pass the PRAXIS #5205 Teaching Reading: Elementary

TUITION

• Tuition is $6,865.00 for the first year and $5,665.00 for the second year, for a total of $12,030.00 + Mandatory Student Fees
• A total of 50 graduate credits will be awarded
• To earn the master’s degree, students enrolled in ALP 2 MAT are required to take 3 additional courses with the School of Education, but outside of the ALP 2 MAT program at an additional cost to the student

CURRICULUM

MAT Curriculum (graduate level courses + licensure)

• Teacher Candidates enrolled in the ALP 2 MAT program complete the licensure requirements and 43 hours of graduate education coursework during the five semesters (two years plus a summer) they are enrolled in the ALP 2 MAT program.
• Teacher Candidates will be eligible to apply for their Initial Colorado Teaching license with an endorsement in Elementary Education when they have successfully completed the ALP 2 MAT program and all required graduate courses.
• If an ALP 2 MAT Teacher Candidate decides to move from the MAT sequence to the non-MAT ALP 2 program, he/she may do so at semester breaks.

CLASS SCHEDULE

• All ALP 2 MAT Teacher Candidates are required to attend five days of Summer Seminar training in July
• During the school year, first year students attend classes every Tuesday and second year students attend every Wednesday from 5:15pm – 8:15pm
• Classes are held face-to-face
