FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for services?

MSU Denver students who are currently enrolled and attending classes for at least one credit hour in Fall, Spring, or Summer, may receive services.

We do not see faculty and staff, who instead may choose to utilize the Colorado State Employee Assistance Program (CSEAP) Counseling Services http://cseap.colorado.gov/.

We provide short-term, goal-focused counseling that addresses a student’s mental health concerns roughly within a semester time-frame.  Students with concerns that are outside of this scope will be provided additional support and assistance to find the most appropriate mental health care for them. For some concerns your therapist may recommend a referral to an off-campus agency who will better assist you.

Who will work with me?

Our therapists are qualified mental health professionals; these may include social-workers, psychotherapists, psychologists, and advanced graduate student trainees. For a current listing, see our Staff list.

How do I get an appointment?

To begin counseling you may simply call our main number at (303)615-9988 or come to our clinic office to schedule an initial screen. The initial screen usually takes about 30 minutes.  Your therapist will help determine the nature of your problem(s) and your treatment options. Please note, we are only able to see MSU Denver students who are currently enrolled for at least one credit hour.

If your Initial Screen is in person, you will sent a link through your MSU Denver email to complete your initial relevant forms prior to  your appointment.  Please complete them ahead of time or you can arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete the paperwork.

If your initial appointment is virtual, you will be sent a link through your MSU Denver email to complete the paperwork earlier that day. You will also be sent a Microsoft Teams Invite to connect with your therapist.

What are your hours?

The Counseling Center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed everyday for lunch 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. except Summer Semester). Our last client sessions are at 4:00 p.m. Given the high demand for our services we do encourage you to make an appointment in advance.

Is there a cost?

No. We are able to provide service at no additional charge to currently enrolled MSU Denver Students. Your Student Health Fees cover your services. You will work with your therapist to determine the duration of your care/treatment.

Are services different if I am out of state?

We are not able to offer services to students out of state, but we can connect you with out Telebehavioral Vendor, Uwill.  Please see our Out of State Students section for more information.
